NEXT STOP — The Kitchen.
Create a natural work area. Placing the appliances and the sink in an “L” shape that surrounds the island allows for easy access while the cook prepares dinner. A large center island, like the one shown here, also gives guests a spot to chat with the chef.
Bring in plenty of seating. Welcome everyone with seating that works for dining, as well as homework. This kitchen has a traditional round table with chairs and a comfy banquette. Barstools for an island are also an easy way to add extra seating.
Play with pattern. Just because the kitchen is commonly thought of as a utilitarian space doesn’t mean you can’t have a bit of fun. Mixing two fabrics, as shown on the dining chairs, gives the room a hint of playfulness, making it less formal.
Choose durable flooring. Spills and high foot traffic make easy-to-care-for floors a must. Here, dark hardwoods create a seamless transition from the cooking space to the dining area.
Don’t skimp on lighting. Since the kitchen is a natural workspace, under-cabinet and overhead recessed lighting are a must to provide plenty of light, whether you’re chopping veggies or helping your child with a math problem. Pendants or chandeliers can be a great option for lighting over a tables and islands.
