NEXT STOP — The Kid’s Room.

Kids’ rooms are often one of the most fun and cheerful spaces in a family home. They are one of my favorite spaces to design because the options are as boundless as the imagination. Whether your son wants to sleep under the stars and travel to the moon or your daughter just wants a bright and cheerful princess palace of her own, kids’ rooms are the perfect place to think outside of the box. Here are a few of my favorite tips for creating a room that you’ll both love for years to come.

Get Growing. Just because you want the space to be fun, doesn’t mean you should lose sight of practicality. Select pieces of furniture that can grow with your child and be used far beyond their grammar school days. A traditional bed or pair of bedside tables is something you won’t tire of easily, and they can even be used in a guest room if you decide to switch things up.

Play Favorites. Almost every child has a favorite color. Consider this when selecting paint colors, accessories and bedding. As the child’s interests and style evolve, these things can be easily and inexpensively updated to coordinate.

Let the Personality Shine. There’s nothing wrong with a little personality! Allow your child to shine through in the design of the space. If dance is your daughter’s passion, designate an area of the room for her to hang her ballet shoes or practice a few steps. If your son is an artist, consider the addition of a drafting table to help him master his craft.

Create Stations. Like it or not, kids’ rooms often serve a variety of purposes. Set your child up for success by designating areas for sleep, homework, and play or relaxation. For example, you may have a bed, a desk or built-in hutch for working, and a rug or small seating area for playtime. Having these areas set up for each scenario can help keep the room more organized.
