In celebration of the release of the 2012 Humane Society of Pulaski County (HSPC) Day Planner this month, we treated one of the loving, adoptable pets at the shelter to a “makeover.”
Arjay is a 3-year old Brussels Griffon breed, who was rescued from a puppy mill in the middle of the 100-degree heat wave last summer. Workers at the HSPC responded to an abuse/neglect case involving 58 dogs; Arjay was one of animals they rescued.
“He was completely matted with at least five pounds of mud and feces in his hair. We didn’t know what breed he was until he was bathed and trimmed. He is a wonderful little dog,” said Kay Simpson, shelter director. “Arjay loves to play with a tennis ball and in the dog park. He likes other dogs and doesn’t have a clue what a ‘cat’ is! He is neutered, has all of his shots, is heartworm negative and would do better with children 8 and older.”
Arjay’s day of pampering began with “the works” from the groomers at Chenal Pet Palace. They bathed him, clipped his nails, cleaned his ears and trimmed his hair to frame his face. After a spritz of perfume, he was ready to slip on his new outfit from Just Dogs! Gourmet in the Promenade at Chenal and strike a pose! If you are interested in adopting Arjay — or any of the more than 200 animals at the shelter who need homes — contact the HSPC at (501) 227-6166 or log onto warmhearts.org.

… for the release of the HSPC’s 2012 Day Planner. This handy calendar and day planner features color photographs of local pets and their “people.” The day planner is the shelter’s biggest fundraiser, raising money to allow it — the only no-kill shelter in Pulaski County, which functions solely on donations — to rescue, treat and find homes for the more than 200 animals in their care.

The 2012 Day Planner cover art is a painting by acclaimed Arkansas artist J.O. Buckley; it is of his now deceased rescue dog, Dixie. Planners cost $25 each, and beginning Nov. 1 will be available at more than 30 outlets throughout central Arkansas. For a list of outlets, log onto warmhearts.org or call the shelter at (501) 227-6166.

The Humane Society of the Ozarks produces a coffee table book, Tails of Love, which features more than 200 pages of endearing photographs of dogs, cats and horses and their “people,” including the cover image of the dog Irish Bailey Creme.
Proceeds support the shelter’s vital programs: low-cost spay and neuter; emergency outreach; community education; adoption awareness; animal cruelty investigations; and medical care for rescued animals. Tails of Love costs $25 and is available at several northwest Arkansas retailers including: So Inviting; Riff Raff; French Quarter Antiques; Crossover Veterinary Clinic. Log onto the HSO website, hsozarks.org or call (479) 444-7387, for a complete list.
