Monthly Makeover: September

New Look for Newlywed

Delisa Hayes-Washington after makeover

Delisa Hayes-Washington submitted her name for an AY monthly makeover with the desire to “do something totally different to ‘wow’ my husband.”

We just happen to know two stylists who specialize in “wow” — Cynthia Austin, owner/stylist at Designing Women, and Anitra Walker, makeup artist; each of these ladies have more than 20 years experience in their chosen fields.

Hayes-Washington, 43, usually wears her hair short, however, she’s never had a permanent color, and said she simply loves her new look. “I think I look sexy and elegant … and glamorous.”

Husband Gary thought so as well. “He said ‘You look like a real movie star’; he loves my new look. My co-workers love how I look — I’m getting good reviews, and several have asked for the stylists’ phone numbers.

Austin began by using a spot treatment to relax Hayes-Washington’s natural curl. “I also added highlights to the ends of her hair to add a bit of color, to enhance her complexion,” Austin said. She tapered Hayes-Washington’s hair on the sides and back to fit the size and shape of her face. “I used Nairobi Shampoo and Conditioner to cleanse and treat her hair. I added a mouse to set her hair … I feel this is one of the most important processes.”

Afterward Austin used a large-barrel curling iron to create large curls and smaller Marcel irons to create small curls in the back, creating a dramatic style.

Anitra Walker began Hayes-Washington’s makeover with a Color Me Beautiful foundation. She used “Bittersweet” by Flori Roberts to add contour to her nose, forehead and cheeks. She used “Taupe,” “Beige” and shimmer along with “Black,” by Color Me Beautiful, on her eyes along with a chocolate brown brow pencil by Flori Roberts and “Bahamas Blue” eyeliner by Mary Kay. Walker combined “Mauve” and “Wine” blushes, also by Color Me Beautiful, to highlight Hayes-Washington’s cheekbones. Walker lined Hayes-Washington’s lips with a chocolate brown pencil, then used Mac’s “Syrup” and Polynesian Petals by Mary Kay. Walker added strip lashes to complete Hayes-Washington’s new look.
