Nestled in the River Market where Markham and Scott streets converge, the force behind one of Little Rock’s newest eateries is a family affair.

Mother and daughter Helen and Leila King noticed the space over a year ago, when it was still operating as The Hop. The hustle and bustle surrounding the location made the Kings think about asking the Hop to sell, and when the owners said yes, they decided on changing the name to reflect that energy — “At The Corner.”

The Kings recruited Jordan Williams, who served as the sous chef for the Pine Bluff Country Club for nearly 10 years. Williams helped get the eatery off the ground, but has since left the restaurant. Acting as apprentice chef and PR guru is Kamiya Merrick, a Canadian native who, of course, was involved with ensuring poutine was offered on the menu.

In March 2015, the restaurant opened its doors to the neighborhood, offering burgers, dogs, soups, salads, and sandwiches, as well as a breakfast menu. Early on, the team worked to create partnerships with other local businesses, including hot dogs from Butcher & Public, Arkansas Fresh buns, and bread from Old Mill Bread & Flour Company. They also offer Loblolly ice cream.

Aside from their local angle, the lunch menu is complete with original flavor combinations. The PB & bacon jam burger, for instance, harbors a homemade bacon jam that is to die for. If you’d rather have a hot dog, give the Trolley Dog a try. The lemon curd paired with mustard, pickled red onions, slaw, and pickles creates a pleasant flavor balance.

The daily specials are also well worth a try, including the recently featured carrot tandoori soup and hot ham and pimento cheese sandwich which was top-notch. Don’t forget breakfast, which can be simple with traditional eggs paired with toast and grits, or on the sweeter side with a Nutella and banana sandwich.

On my most recent trip I simply enjoyed the atmosphere from the comfort of a red booth after placing my order at the counter. As I sat along the windows bordering Markham Street, I watched the trolley lazily drift by amongst the dog walkers and suits. There’s something to be said for the friendly service that you’ll find upon entering the establishment. Have you tried it yet? Head on down and I’ll meet you at the corner.
