sed of prints\, video and objects created by Cuban artist Sandra Ramos who
resides in Havana\, Cuba. For over twenty years this artist has reflected
in masterful prints the conflicting experiences of living in her beloved
homeland with all its many challenges. Her work often takes a narrative fo
rm in which she depicts herself as a child-like explorer of modern day Ali
ce in Wonderland. Ramos&#39\;s prints and mixed media works feature exquis
ite draftsmanship and use of the color and naivet&eacute\;\, tempered by w
it and irony.</p>\n<p>\n	Her unique style and graphic and design skills ha
ve made her work much appreciated internationally. Her work can be found i
n prestigious permanent collections such as the Museum of Modern Art\, New
York\, The Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston and Fuchu Art Museum Tokyo.</p>\n
<p>\n	Ms. Ramos formerly taught at the Higher Institute of Art\, Havana an

DESCRIPTION:<p>\n	American Encounters</p>\n<p>\n	Genre Painting and Everyda
 y Life</p>\n<p>\n	May 11- August 12</p>\n<p>\n	Genre painting flourished i
n the United States during the mid-nineteenth century. These narrative sce
nes depicting the everyday activities of “stock” or “typed” characters cap
tivated American audiences. Genre paintings helped to express a distinctly
“American” character\, often through the exploration of racial\, regional
\, or class differences. This exhibition of five paintings includes works
by George Caleb Bingham\, Eastman Johnson\, and Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait —
American painters whose works illustrate three very different cultural exp
eriences within the greater context of the United States. These are exhibi
ted alongside two paintings from the Louvre that present the Dutch and Eng
lish schools which helped to inspire American genre artists. This exhibiti
on will debut at the Louvre from Jan. 23– Apr. 22\, 2013\, then travel to
Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (May 11– Aug. 12\, 2013) and the Hi

\, 2013</strong></p>\n<p>\n	In the aftermath of the Civil War\, the Americ
an girl seemed transformed&mdash\;at once more introspective and adventuro
us than the previous generation. Although the culture still prized the dem
ure female child of the past\, many saw a bolder type as the new\, alterna
te ideal. Girlhood was no longer simple\, and the complementary images of
angel and tomboy emerged as competing visions of this new generation. For
the first time\, girls claimed the attention of genre artists\, and girlho
od itself seized the imagination of the nation. <em>Angels and Tomboys: Gi
rlhood in Nineteenth-Century American Art</em> explores the myriad ways ar
tists portrayed young girls: from the sentimental\, innocent stereotype to
the free-spirited individual.</p>\n<p>\n	The exhibition includes approxim
 ately 80 masterworks\, including paintings\, sculpture\, prints\, and phot
ographs. Works by John Singer Sargent\, Winslow Homer\, and Thomas Eakins\
, together with those by leading women artists\, such as Cecilia Beaux and
Mary Cassatt\, reveal a new\, provocative psychological element not found
in early Victorian portraiture. The mischievous tomboys in Lilly Martin S
pencer&rsquo\;s paintings and the pure angels in the works of Abbot Hander
son Thayer underscore the complexity of girlhood. This exhibition is an il
luminating exploration of what it meant to be young\, female\, and America
n in the nineteenth century. Visit <u>http://crystalbridges.org/Exhibition

DESCRIPTION:<p>\n	 </p>\n<p style='margin-bottom:0in\;'>\n	The gently rolli

re the setting for the third annual running of the Winslow Half Marathon &
5K Run\, for a race that is set to take runners on an out-and-back tour o
f the hills just outside this tiny city that lies along the western edge o
f the Ozark National Forest. This year's race is scheduled for September 1
4th.<br /><br />\n	 Featuring a race start and finish that lie just a shor
t drive from one another in downtown Winslow -- home to a few hundred resi
dents\, according to the most recent census -- the race is a fundraising e
ffort by the Winslow Community Development Council and is also timed to co
incide with the annual Winfest Music Festival\, which has drawn musical ac
ts both locally from Winslow and from around Arkansas since it was first s
taged back in 1982 and a Community Expo at the finish line in Peaks Park..
<br /><br />\n	 Both the half marathon and the 5K race start at the Winslo
w Public Library on Highway 71\, just off School Avenue. From there\, runn
ers in the 13.1-mile half marathon follow a route that winds westward alon
g School Avenue and then turns south on Main Street and then west again on
East Van Buren Avenue\, which runners will remain on for the next couple
of miles until the course makes a slight left turn onto Bunyard Road\, jus
 t before passing the mile 2 marker.<br /><br />\n	 After making the turn o
nto Bunyard\, runners then follow the route for nearly the next five miles
as Bunyard first heads south and then curves around to head west in the d
irection of Interstate 540. Race organizers say that have planned the race
route to be as flat as possible in what is a generally hilly part of the
country\, and while runners can expect some rolling hills along Bunyard\,
the elevation changes are never dramatic and usually involve only small up
hills and downhills.<br /><br />\n	 The half marathon turnaround point lie
s between the mile 6 and mile 7 markers on Bunyard Road\, and there runner
s make the turn and retrace their steps along the route they've just run a
ll the way back to Winslow. The course turns left onto Center Street befor
e bringing runners all the way back along Van Buren\, to take runners up t
oward the finish line at the Winslow City Hall\, which lies inside the Fri
sco Loop. The half marathon is open to walkers as well as runners\, provid
ed they can finish the course within the event's three-hour time limit.<br
