Shannon Duke decided to think outside of the box and accept an offer proposed by B98.5 via her friend Terri Valentine.

Duke, a thirty-something, preK teacher, met Jeff Matthews and Kevin Miller from B98.5’s Morning Rush, at the 2007 Komen Race for the Cure in Little Rock.

“My friend Terri had surgery for colon cancer shortly before the race and couldn’t participate. So we sat on the fire truck near the B98.5 crew. We talked back and forth during the day. Later, they approached Terri with the idea [of the Rendezvous contest], and she approached me.”

“We really like Shannon. As we talked with her we realized, she’s a great person. She had a very obvious compassion for her friend,” Matthews said. “We had talked about the contest, and we really wanted someone who could be a face and a personality for the station.”

Duke has one sister, and they were reared in Sherwood, Arkansas. As a child, she wanted to be an actress. “I went into college studying theatre. I decided halfway through college to teach theatre,” she said. She earned a bachelor of science degree in education.

Her favorite actors include Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Kevin Spacey and George Clooney; and her favorite movie of all time is “‘The Notebook.’ I don’t like horror movies at all.”

Duke began her teaching career in 2003 as a speech and drama teacher at North Little Rock High School’s East Campus. She later realized, while volunteering teaching 5-year-olds, that she truly enjoyed teaching the youngsters and so made the transition to elementary education. She also volunteers as a choreographer for the Arkansas Arts Center Children’s Theatre. Duke enjoys baseball and football — she’s an Arkansas Travelers and University of Arkansas at Fayetteville Razorback fan — enjoys working out, and a variety of music.

“I love going to concerts. My taste in music is pretty eclectic; I like everything except hard rock and rap,” she said.

Duke’s ideal date is “nothing major. A nice dinner and maybe a walk or going to have coffee afterward … something that allows for meaningful conversation.”

Duke loves coffee and drinks a Starbucks Iced Chai Tea Latte everyday. She’s also a dog person. She has a Maltese named Bella, who loves other dogs. Duke’s ideal mate is someone who is a Christian and shares her values; someone who has a great sense of humor and who isn’t afraid of intimacy. “I would like to find a man who can be a pillar of strength for me and I for he.”
