Back in the early 1990S, shortly after Mississippi allowed casino gambling, Julie and I ventured into our first gambling hall. It was an autumn Saturday afternoon in Biloxi, and it was the best time we ever had in a casino.

Shortly after Michael Jackson died, a friend of mine posted a message on Facebook that she couldn’t get the singer’s music out of her head. I suggested she let a little fractured syntax from “I’ll Be There” run through her brain for a while.

A long time ago, I wrote a newspaper article about a journal a priest had discovered in a Morrilton church. The journal, written in Latin, had been kept by an early missionary in the Arkansas River Valley. One amusing entry the priest interpreted for me, freely translated, described Arkansas in summer as a “suburb of hell.”

A friend of mine, who’s jogged, biked, hiked and done just about everything that involves strenuous exercise, once said something that surprised me. Athletes, she said, are the unhealthiest people around. Always hurting themselves. Especially the, well, mature ones. Walking with a limp or hobbling around on crutches. Braces on elbows and knees. Popping ibuprofen as if the tablets were M&M’s.

As a salute to Mother’s Day, I’d like to recommend that you, dear reader, check out Thomas Friedman’s latest book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded. It’s the most eye-opening and troubling book I have read in a while — maybe since I read Friedman’s The World Is Flat in 2005.
