Back in the early 1990S, shortly after Mississippi allowed casino gambling, Julie and I ventured into our first gambling hall. It was an autumn Saturday afternoon in Biloxi, and it was the best time we ever had in a casino.

A long time ago, I wrote a newspaper article about a journal a priest had discovered in a Morrilton church. The journal, written in Latin, had been kept by an early missionary in the Arkansas River Valley. One amusing entry the priest interpreted for me, freely translated, described Arkansas in summer as a “suburb of hell.” |
