 A friend of mine, who’s jogged, biked, hiked and done just about everything that involves strenuous exercise, once said something that surprised me. Athletes, she said, are the unhealthiest people around. Always hurting themselves. Especially the, well, mature ones. Walking with a limp or hobbling around on crutches. Braces on elbows and knees. Popping ibuprofen as if the tablets were M&M’s. |

 As a salute to Mother’s Day, I’d like to recommend that you, dear reader, check out Thomas Friedman’s latest book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded. It’s the most eye-opening and troubling book I have read in a while — maybe since I read Friedman’s The World Is Flat in 2005.
