During the winter 2007, Charlotte and Craig Benson noticed their daughter Christiane seemed to have trouble seeing. There was a routine vision screening at Christiane’s school and [officials there] said she was having problems with her vision. “That’s what started the odyssey,” Craig Benson said. An optometrist determined lenses could not correct Christiane’s problem; he sent them to a neurologist. “That dialed up the intensity — immediately,” Benson said. “Initially, they didn’t find anything. She had an MRI, and nothing was irregular.” |

Johnson Baker’s angel looks out from above the mantle and across the golden-hued living room of the Little Rock home he shares with his wife Karen. The oil-on-canvas painting titled “Cascade Angel” is an impressionistic compilation of delicate brushstrokes of white against bold blues reminiscent of a waterfall. Of all the paintings she has kept, the angel is Karen’s favorite — partly because it reminds her of her husband’s zest for life and of the power of art to transform. Baker, who has lived with Alzheimer’s disease for the past 16 years, painted the angel in 1994, just a few months after his diagnosis at age 54. A successful urology surgeon, Baker retired from his 25-year medical career the next day.

When making a film, there is so much that goes on behind the scenes — unbeknownst to the viewer. In Arkansas of late, there’s been quite a bit of behind-the-scenes activity to promote our own film industry. Film production can be a major boost for a state’s economy, and many are working hard to ensure The Natural State gets a piece of the pie.
