Recently I found myself about to start a new project in my backyard. And just for clarification, “I found myself about to start a project” means my lovely bride has been patiently waiting for me to start this project for three months, and I have been putting it off for as long as I could get away with it.
Well, I was informed that time had passed, and it was time to get busy. The project itself is not that hard of a job; we simply are trying to skirt a deck to hide the ugly dirt and gravel area underneath. I am pretty handy and can build almost anything but sometimes figuring out what I need before I start the project is the major headache I run into. How much wood do I need? What size lumber? What about hardware? Screws? Nails? Joist hangers? You get the point.
Since I don’t do this for a living, nor do I do it often enough to think about everything I might possibly need. I needed an expert. I picked up the phone and called Lumber One. I get this guy Adam on the phone. I talked him through what we are thinking and give him some measurements that he asked for. He then went through everything we were going to need and offered several suggestions about different ways to achieve the look we were going for.
Turns out, that in typical “me” fashion, I was going to over-engineer it and build this thing myself. Adam pointed out that unless I was truly building this as a shelter from a hurricane, I could cut down the amount of lumber I was planning on buying in half and build it a different way.
By the time our call was over, he had my order placed, and I had paid for it. And he set me up to deliver it that next day! As if that wasn’t enough, he called me back the next day, and said, “Listen, if you really want it delivered today, we will, but it is supposed to rain several days this week. If you aren’t planning on starting until the weekend, why don’t we wait and deliver it Friday afternoon, so it has less chance of being rained on?” Man, that was a brilliant suggestion, and one he didn’t have to make. That is just the level of customer service Lumber One provides. In a world where good customer service is NOT the norm, and you go to these big box stores and no one helps you, and you have to check yourself out… it’s almost shocking to find a company that still cares about the customer.
All of this stemming from one phone call about lumber. Turns out they do much more than that, and I promise you that we will be shopping them for everything we possibly can going forward.
Now I guess I need to get back to actually working on this project…
