Arkansas will be holding its annual sales tax holiday on the first weekend in August for back-to-school shoppers.
From Saturday, Aug. 3 through Sunday, Aug. 4, shoppers in Arkansas will be able to purchase certain school supplies, instructional materials and clothing free of state and local sales taxes.
The sales tax holiday, established by Act 757 of 2011, is held annually on the first Saturday in August. Retailers are required to participate in the sales tax exemption if selling eligible merchandise during the holiday, according to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration.
School supplies that are tax-exempt include binders, book bags, paper, pencil and pens, notebooks, crayons and more. See a complete list below.
School art supplies and instructional materials are also tax-exempt. Textbooks, and workbooks are examples of instructional materials, while watercolors, drawing pads and paintbrushes are exempt art supplies.
Clothing that is “suitable for general use” is also exempt during the sales tax holiday. However, to be exempt, each individual clothing item must be $100 or less.
