The Arkansas Twisters will not be kicking off in 2019.
The North Little Rock-based indoor football league franchise is owned by the National Gridiron League (NGL), which has announced that it is adjusting the entire league’s kickoff schedule and focusing on a 2020 launch.
“Every market deserves the opportunity to properly promote to allow each market the best opportunity for success,” Joe McClendon, National Gridiron League president said. “We have worked extremely hard to secure the rights markets and venues for our league and to launch twelve expansion franchises at once takes a tremendous effort. We felt it would be in the best interest of our teams, fans and venues if we do not rush our kickoff and take some additional time to ensure a fantastic first experience. A great fan experience will forever be our standard moving forward.”
A NGL press release cited the closing of the Alliance of American Football, league organizational changes, and players’ “desire to create a player’s association” as the primary reasons for the season’s cancellation.
The Alliance of American Football closed operations this week after eight weeks of games. League owner Tom Dundon elected to suspend AAF operations, but a reason was not given in a letter sent to employees from the AAF board.
However, the NGL is expecting to pick up next year. That should mean that the Twisters will be playing in Verizon Arena by 2020.
The Twisters have a history in North Little Rock. It was originally an Arena Football 2 franchise, which launched in 2000. It was renamed the Arkansas Diamondbacks in 2010, and the team moved to Allen, Texas the next year.
If you have purchased season tickets, the league will be working to transfer packages to the 2020 season.
Season ticket holders will also receive:
- 2 passes to NGL team youth football camps this summer and fall
- A one-year pass to any NGL team Touchdown Club
- 2 Player passes to invite any professional player to a NGL team tryout
- 1 free team t-shirt and hat
Also, individuals with 2019 season tickets can get full refunds.
