AY About You is bringing Arkansans the beauty scoop with a brand-new makeup segment featuring local hair and makeup artist Kakki Jones and AY Publisher Heather Baker. Stay tuned for a weekly article featuring tips and tricks from a Little Rock cosmetic-pro and a curious magazine curator.
For Little Rock beauty-guru Kakki Jones, there is no cosmetic task she has yet to conquer. After being scouted in a Dallas mall for her makeup talents as a teenager, Jones decided to take her passions for art and making people feel as gorgeous as they are and turn it into a career. With years of experience working with brands like Yves Saint Laurent and Mac Cosmetics, Jones now does freelance work for gala-goers, fashion models, brides and more.
Jones’ beauty expertise does not end with event makeup and hair. In addition to special-occasion bookings, Jones offers one-on-one and group makeup lessons. Jones welcomes clientele of all ages to learn about basic techniques, brush functions, color pairings and more tailored tips.
“It is really rewarding to make people feel as beautiful as they are,” Jones says. She also stresses how understanding the basics is what helps others see color in a new way.
This week, Jones and Baker discussed how to properly primp the face with foundation, contouring, baking and all. Watch Jones perform her favorite face techniques on Baker in the first Beauty With Baker video segment below!

Foundation
“Don’t overuse foundation. Start with a minimal amount where you need it (generally throughout the t-zone), and blended in or out spending on where you started.”
Jones’ Foundation Recommendation:
- YSL Forever Light Creator CC Primer in Apricot
- YSL Forever Light Creator CC Primer in Rose
- Guerlain Meteorites Baby Glow Light-Revealing SPF 25, No. 2 Sheer Light Foundation for Women
Baking
“Use a powder that is HD or has satin rather than a matte finish. Use a light shade that complements your skin tone to keep the under-eye area bright! Generously apply under the eyes to catch shadows.”
Jones’ Baking Powder Recommendation:
Blush
“Have both a pink shade and a coral shade of blush in your beauty wardrobe to use either separately or mixed for a third color option.”
Jones’ Blush Recommendations:
- Dior Backstage Rosy Glow: Color-Awakening Universal Blush
- Blush Bundle – Kylie Cosmetics Blush Set
- NARS Blush
Contouring
“Choose a deep shade that best suits your most dominant undertones. Then, make a “3” shape on the face starting where the forehead and hairline meet and take the brush down to the hollow of the cheek. Once in the hollow of the cheekbone, guide your brush along the jawline. To finish, go back and carve definition into the face’s hollow features (like the temple).”
