September doesn’t just herald the beginning of fall, or at least the final throes of summer in Arkansas, it’s also the month of a very special birthday. And this year, AY Magazine is throwing a contest to celebrate the occasion.

We’re not celebrating Will Smith’s birthday, or Adam Sander’s, or Nick Jonas’, or Jennifer Lopez’s. It’s not even a celebration for Beyonce’s birthday. (But that would be a great idea!)

“The month of September should be on your calendar – your iPhone should tell you – that’s the month of Heather Baker’s birthday,” AY Magazine Editor-at-Large Lisa Fischer says.

To celebrate Baker’s birthday, AY Magazine is holding a cake contest because there’s few things that she loves more than cake.

“Heather – she loves her some cake! Is that kind of your mantra? Cake, cake, cake!,” Fischer jokes.  “The bigger the cake, the better,” Baker says.

To participate in the cake contest, click here. Once you are there, nominators will submit their name, phone and email, along with the name of the person/business that you are submitting, what kind of cake you are nominating, a photo of that cake and why you think AY should choose your cake.

Once all of the nominations are in, a special committee will narrow the nominations down to a list of 10 finalist cakes. The judges will then taste-test these 10 cakes. The nominators/bakers must be able to bring their cakes on a date that will be determined.

Can you guess who the committee of judges will be? “The committee – Heather and I – will get together. You can bring it to the office, and the committee – Heather and I taste it,” Fischer says.

As far as requirements, it just has to taste good! The cakes can be made by professional bakery shops or by your grandmother. Both Baker and Fischer say the kind of cake is irrelevant, although Fischer encourages bakers to send Italian cream cakes, her favorite.  The origins and the look of the cake are secondary to the taste. “I’ll be honest with you, it doesn’t have to be the prettiest cake, it just has to taste good,” Baker says.

“Oh, so we take ugly cakes?” Fischer says with a chuckle.

“I love ugly cakes,” Baker says.

“Good. Then bring your ugly cake, or your pretty cake,” Fischer says. “Bring it to us – we will taste-test it, and at the end of the month, someone will win.”

A winner will be announced once the judging is complete. But the judges may be the ones getting the best deal. “We’re actually the winners of the whole thing because we get to eat all the cake,” Baker jokes.
