Cruising Over to Capitol Smokehouse and Grill for the Barbecue Bucket List
Heather Baker’s second stop on the Barbecue Bucket List takes her to the Capitol Smokehouse and Grill, right in downtown Little Rock, where she sits down at a table loaded with classic, Southern comfort food.
Baker starts with an iconic plate of pulled pork, baked beans and potato salad. “Did you know they have their own rub and sauces for sale?” she asks before digging in.
Next is their chicken spaghetti, available on Wednesdays as one of their daily Blue Plate Specials. “It’s got a little spice to it – you’ve got turnip greens, slaw, and of course, you’ve got a jalapeño cornbread roll – and it’s all mine today,” says Baker.
Heather’s serving of smoked chicken special comes with homemade squash casserole, fresh green beans, and an oven-baked roll. She loves the rub seasoning and decides she’s going to buy some before she leaves to take home.
Many items are part of Capitol’s rotating schedule of specials, but you can get other items – like their meatloaf and ribs – every day. Baker takes a bite out of one of the ribs, saying, “These are so good, I don’t even have any sauce on them. The meat is so good; it is cooked to perfection.”
In between bites, Heather sips on a refreshing lemonade and sweet tea Arnold Palmer and finishes her meal with some sweet treats: banana pudding and an ooey-gooey bar.
“I don’t even need barbecue,” Baker says, scooping a spoonful of the pudding,” I can just have a tray full of this. It is so good, and we will see you next week.
