A slice of chocolate pie from Charlotte’s Sweets and Eats
Here in Arkansas, we love our pie, and for my money, it just does not get any better than the offerings at Charlotte’s Sweets and Eats in Keo. In advance of Thanksgiving, I took the 35-minute drive to the small town southeast of Little Rock for three pies: coconut, chocolate, and apple.
Now, before you get upset and start pounding the counter as to how and why I would go all that way and not get a caramel pie, just hear me out. I am well-aware of the caramel’s popularity amongst Arkansans. However, I was not quite feeling it for Thanksgiving. Hey, I am being honest.

I also passed on the pumpkin because you can get a good pumpkin pie just about anywhere. As for the pecan? While I absolutely adore it, we have a nut allergy in our household, so I try to keep it out of the building.
Back to my awesome choices: coconut, chocolate, and apple. Let’s start with apple. Honestly, this one was for my wife, as I am not a huge apple pie guy. But seriously, it was amazing. Double crusted and with a delectable apple filling, this pie might finally convert me to an apple-pie-for-the-holidays kind of guy.

As for the coconut and chocolate pies? Well, just look at the pictures attached to this post. They practically speak for themselves. Each one comes with a jaw-dropping meringue layer (please don’t call it calf slobber) that approaches five inches tall. The light and fluffy meringue is not cloyingly sweet and pairs well with the coconut, custardy layer. The same goes for the chocolate pie. The crust on each pie is thick and buttery, but slightly flakey with just the right amount of firmness to hold up to the filling and meringue. Simply put, it’s a substantial piece of pie. Per usual, my absolute favorite was the coconut, which you can typically find me pairing with a big cup of black coffee.
Yes, I obviously overdid things by getting three pies for four people, but this is the holidays, and you have to go big or go home. It is also good to support local business. Plus, I had to make that drive worth my time and there are worse things in life than eating awesome pie for six straight days. It made for a great Thanksgiving.

Fortunately for us, Charlotte’s is also doing Christmas pre-orders on all of their favorite pies (pecan, pumpkin, caramel, lemon, cherry, apple, chocolate, and coconut). The cost is $24.50 (plus tax) per pie, which is very reasonable given the size and quality. Call 501-842-2125. Pick-ups will be on December 23 between 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Please be aware that if you do want to order pies from Charlotte’s, I would not procrastinate. Due to a lack of time and baking space, they can only take so many orders. Once they hit their limit, that’s it.
And if you couldn’t tell, these pies are not something you want to miss out on.
