The trees are changing color, leaves are falling and a crisp autumn chill is in the air … time to fall into the cardigan. While probably bringing to mind an itchy, voluminous sweater worn by your grandpa as he sat by the fireplace and smoked his pipe, modern cardigans have a slimmer cut and come in a variety of fabric weights, textures and patterns, making them the perfect choice for a sharp autumn look.

This heavy cardigan in a bold pattern is the essence of fall style.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Mr. Rogers had it right.  Most offices are like meat lockers, especially in the fall and winter months. Instead of sitting at your desk in a stiff blazer all day, keep a thin cardigan handy in a neutral color (like black, gray or navy) to wear on chilly days.

  • Grown Man’s Hoodie: With the exception of teenagers, no man should really wear a hoodie in public unless he’s going for a morning jog. Cardigans are more sophisticated and versatile, pairing well with anything from jeans to chinos to dress slacks. Plus, they are perfect for holiday parties!
  • Versatile Layering: Speaking of versatility, cardigans look appropriate and stylish over a dress shirt (with or without a tie), polo, v-neck or even a simple T-shirt. Cardigans can also be worn underneath a blazer or jacket to add an extra layer of warmth during those cold morning commutes.

Switch out your blazer for a cardigan on those chilly autumn days.

Stores like H&M, Zara and Express carry a wide selection of cardigans in various styles and fabric options. As the temperature continues to drop, ditch that hoodie or college sweatshirt and pick up a classic cardigan.  You won’t look like your grandfather, and you will feel like a gentleman.
