Old Mill Bread & Flour Company is on the move. Fans can now find the restaurant’s soups, salads, sandwiches, and bread at the Ottenheimer hall in the River Market.
The flagship location in West Little Rock has been a fixture for nearly 30 years, and has gained a loyal following. Once Andrew Graham bought the business in 2014 he knew he wanted to maintain and grow the loyal customer-base that the former owners had generated over the years.
Thus, the River Market location became a reality in order to meet customer demands. Graham says, “We looked at the River Market because we were constantly having customers come in wishing we were closer to the east side of town and felt the River Market was a good hub to catch all the others that haven’t heard of us.”
Plans were in the works when Graham found out he was being deployed and would have to go overseas. He says, “It was a shock, but it’s what I chose to do 12 years ago when I joined the Arkansas National Guard. We sat down as a family and decided to push forward even though I wouldn’t be around much longer and would be deployed for a year.”
Thus, Andrew’s father John stepped in, along with the rest of the family. John has little restaurant experience, but is an easy-going people person, and has been doing the heavy lifting for the past few months.
He says, “Our customers are great – they’re basically the best customers you can get. If it wasn’t for the previous owners, staff, and our baker, we wouldn’t be where we are.”
John sees the new location as a perfect opportunity to grow. Plus, he’s particularly excited about the recent introduction of French toast to the menu. It holds nostalgia for him, as he used to make it for breakfast for his children when they were younger.
This time around, however, the choice of bread takes it up a notch, as he explains, “We’re making it with our different special breads – like Cranberry Pecan and Cinnamon Raisin Walnut – the customers are just loving it.”
Old Mill is running smoothly thanks to the Grahams’ hard work. “Without [my dad] and the support of my sister, brother, and mom we wouldn’t have been able to move forward,” says Andrew.
