It’s June, and that means summer isn’t just around the corner. It’s practically here!
Our days are already being filled with senior high football for my son, Hunter, and camps galore for my daughter, Savvy. But we’re still gearing up for some fun family activities, especially if it means we can hop in
the Jeep and travel the roads of Arkansas.
We won’t be going too far from home, and we don’t have to. That’s because Arkansas is loaded with exciting places to visit for the whole family. And inside our June magazine, you’ll find some of those great Natural State vacation spots, regardless of which corner you call home.
Load up the car this summer and go for a ride to any one of the places described by our own Joe David Rice. Nobody knows our state quite like him.
And nothing says summer quite like a nice cold drink. One of the best parts of this time of year is sitting out on a patio, soaking in the summer sun, with a cool cocktail in my hand. If you don’t believe me, check out our list of cool summer cocktails.
From the Capital Bar in downtown Little Rock to the Avenue Restaurant in the Spa City, these bartenders are serving up drinks you’ll want to imbibe. Some are classic. Some are contemporary. But they’re all delicious, and they look just as good as they taste.
And speaking of delicious cocktails, our friends at ROXOR – Arkansas’ newest and most exciting gin – are gearing up for their first ever Great Arkansas ROX STAR Bartender Competition. The competition is open to active bartenders in Arkansas who will have 10 minutes to make three cocktails, and will be judged by their technique, presentation, taste and originality.
We’re excited to be partnering with ROXOR as they make their way into the bars and restaurants of Arkansas. The first round of competition will take place in Northwest Arkansas on June 4. A Central Arkansas competition will take place on June 11, at Cache in Little Rock. The overall winner will head to New Orleans to attend the Tales of the Cocktail, the biggest bartenders’ conference in the world.
You’ll find out more in the ROXOR story in this issue.
June also marks the anticipated return of Arkansas Money & Politics! After two years of being out of print, the state’s premier business and political magazine is back and better than ever.
We’re so excited to bring you this much-needed publication, and we hope that it becomes a valuable source of compelling and engaging stories about our state’s key influencers when it comes to business and government. With each new month, expect AMP to grow and prosper. We heard your call for a quality slick business magazine in Arkansas, and we’re here to deliver.
June is Men’s Health Month. And in honor of that, we have highlighted some of the biggest threats to a man’s overall health. There’s no better time to show the men in our lives how important they are.
And it’s also important to recognize the impact mental health has on all of us, as well. In recent weeks, we’ve published our 2018 Mental Health Guide, a critical resource for connecting those in need with those who can help.
More than 150,000 Arkansans deal with a mental health issue, and only half of them receive treatment. We have to do better about elevating this conversation in the public sphere in order to let those who may be afraid to reach out for help know that it’s okay. Because it is okay. No one should ever have to suffer alone.
If even one person benefits from our Mental Health Guide, if only one life is saved, it will all have been worth the work we put into creating it. And we’re so grateful to those who helped make it possible – our advertisers who helped create it and those who were willing to open up and tell their stories.
Let’s start summer right by looking out for our loved ones! And happy Father’s Day!
