We’re entering the holiday season sweet spot. Halloween is behind us, and Thanksgiving and Christmas are on the horizon. What’s not to love about that?
Anyone who knows me knows that I go crazy for Christmas. I know it’s only just now November, but guess what? My Christmas tree is already up, and I’m not ashamed!
While I wait anxiously for Christmas, marking my calendar every day along the way, I can’t forget about Thanksgiving and all its meaning. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I have so much to be thankful for – from my beautiful family to the opportunity of being About You’s publisher.
Though it might not measure up to Christmas in the Baker house, Thanksgiving is still an incredible time of year with all the elements of a perfect holiday. We get to enjoy amazing food and fellowship with family and close friends. Like most families, we have cherished Thanksgiving traditions. Each year, we spend that time at my mom’s, where we share with one another what we are thankful for and exchange Christmas lists.
And post-turkey might be the only time you see this girl slow down enough for a nap.
As a family, we guide ourselves into the holiday season with an annual trip to Branson. There’s so much to do and see there this time of year like light tours, holiday-themed shows and, especially, An Old Time Christmas at Silver Dollar City!
We hope that this issue will help guide you into the holiday season with a sense of optimism and thanksgiving.
Included in these pages is our second edition of “Faces of Arkansas.” This section, which highlights nearly 40 industries, serves as a showcase of Arkansas’ finest individuals and businesses. These men and women are making an incredible difference in our state in each of their respective fields, which range from real estate to radiology and from baking to banking. The black and white portraits capture the unique personalities of each and every one of the men and women featured this year. We’re thankful for these folks, too.
This month, we also revisit the wonderful city of Conway with a section devoted to its health, wellbeing and fine citizens. Our neighbor to the west is doing big things, and we’re shining our light on this thriving community.
One of my favorite things to do in Conway this time of year, besides shop, is to take part in Illuminate. Returning for the third year, this holiday event at Rogers Plaza will feature a Ferris wheel, hot chocolate, horse-drawn carriages, and a massive tree lighting. And best of all, Santa Claus will be there. Yes, Santa. I know him!
Conway has much to offer everybody. It’s a serious regional destination for business, education, shopping and more. It’s also become a hot travel destination for those in and around our state. Our travel editor, Joe David Rice, tells us all about it in a way that only he can. Don’t forget to pick up his book, Arkansas Backstories, which is out now. We’ve given you a sneak peak in the back of every AY, and now it’s available for purchase. It will make the perfect gift for any Arkansas lover this Christmas!
There’s so much to love about Arkansas, this time of year and this magazine. Just flip through these pages and find out for yourself!
