I know it’s only just now October, but in the Baker household, it’s the start of our countdown to the holiday season. There’s really no better time of year!
And as we march headlong into the upcoming holiday season, I can’t help but think about all the things I am thankful for. Sitting on my back deck, I decided to jot a few of them down. Over the next couple of months, I expect the list to only grow.
When thinking about what I’m most thankful for, my family, of course, tops the list. I’m so grateful to be a mother to two wonderful children and a wife to a loving husband. I’m also incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be the publisher of About You. Our magazine grows every day. And I’m growing with it, learning more about myself and this great state. I’m so thankful for my AY family, too!
I’m also very thankful that we have such great charitable organizations in our state working to help others in need, organizations like Komen Arkansas. Komen works hard all year round to bring awareness to breast cancer – educating, raising money and helping those affected. We’re thrilled to once again play a role in their efforts by highlighting the cause and this year’s Runway for a Cure, an event founded by AY and utilized to raise more than $1 million for cancer research. There’s no better time to share the stories of these powerful women, including Susie Everett, than in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
We’ve also told the story of another survivor, Jajuan Archer, who overcame domestic abuse and is using her experiences to help other women in need through her organization, Women’s Own Worth. My friend Jajuan has been brave enough to share with us her story, and we’re so grateful that she has.
If you haven’t noticed, this issue is full of strong women. And that’s why we’re proud to also include ’s list of Intriguing Women. This group of outstanding women have come from all walks of life to build successful careers, shape industries and spur charitable giving in each corner of Arkansas.
These great women were nominated by you, our readers, and represent a diverse and growing state. I’ve enjoyed getting to know each one and what makes them special, and I know you will too.
When I think about how special this time of year is, I can’t help but think of all the great things there are to do in The Natural State in fall. One of my favorite things to do this time of year is to visit some of the exciting, seasonal festivals. Fall is full of fairs, harvest festivals and musical events, like MusicFest in El Dorado and King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena. You can read all about them and more inside.
If you haven’t heard, Arkansas is the cheese dip capital of the world. Don’t listen to what your friends from Texas might say. We know it’s true. Why else would the World Cheese Dip Championship be held right here in our own backyard?
In honor of the cheese dip championship, we’ve taken a hard look at Arkansas’ finest cheese dips. Our resident food expert Kat Robinson has trekked the state in search of the best. She’s given us her favorites.
And remember: No double dipping!
