As soon as Arkansas gets its act together, maybe we’ll finally have that warm weather and sunshine we’ve been waiting for. Winter clothes are out and swimsuits and shorts are in, so the tans need to be ready.
I bragged on Becky Chrestman at Sunlimited Tanning Salon & Day Spa a few weeks ago when I was preparing for my beach trip. At that time, I was enjoying the results of the bronzing bed, and this week I’m back to discuss the many spray tan options offered.
For the past few weeks I’ve been attending multiple events a week, and thanks to Becky, my skin has been one less thing for me to worry about. My skin looks naturally tanned and I like to think that I’m glowing.
Spray tans have a reputation for being streaky and orange, but Becky and her team have perfected the technique for amazing results.
“[Sunlimited offers] custom airbrush spray tans,” Becky says. “We also have a Norvell Auto Revolution Booth and a Mystic Kyss Booth for clients that prefer privacy or just want to walk in without an appointment.”
Becky is so precise when applying the spray tan. She gives the fingers, toes, knees and creases all the attention they deserve to prevent unwanted streaks and color splotches. I look like I have spent time in the sun rather than under all these rain clouds.
“We ask a lot of questions to help determine the best [color] option based upon time of year, the event, what [the client] will be wearing to the event, the client’s skin tone and how long they can wait before showering,” Becky explains. “There is no single solution that works on everyone so we carry multiple brands and shades. We always custom mix spray solutions to best match the client’s skin tone and desired results.”
Getting that natural look is majorly due to the expertise of the applier, but how to prepare and take care of your tan is also incredibly important.
“To prepare, the client should get their manicure and pedicures before the spray tan,” Becky says. “All waxing should be done at least 24 hours in advance and the client should shave and exfoliate 24 hours before the spray tan. Arrive at the appointment with no deodorant, lotion, perfumes or makeup. Wear dark, loose-fitting clothing and flip flops and no hats, boots or tennis shoes.”
As far as aftercare is concerned, Becky has a few tips she tells all of her clients
- Aftercare is critical! The first shower is a warm water rinse only with no soap and no washcloth or loofah. Simply use your hands to gently wash off the cosmetic bronzers.
2. Drink lots of water and keep the skin moisturized! DHA is drying for the skin so using spray tan-safe moisturizers and body wash also helps extend the life of the tan. (No parabens, no sulfates, no mineral oil, no petroleum and low alcohol content.) We carry all of these products and can help clients find one they love.
3. Depending on the spray solutions used, clients will need to stay cool and away from water with no sweating for four to 12 hours. Things to consider: animals that may want to lick you, small children that spill things, drinks in cups that sweat can drip on you, weather/rain, brushing your teeth, etc.
4. It’s best to get a spray tan two days before an event, but some circumstances may change that recommendation, such as work attire that causes friction or planned workouts/sports that require sports bras and/or socks and tennis shoes. These can cause wear on the tan in areas that may be exposed for the event so we will help you plan for all of this!
Spray tan sessions take anywhere between 10 minutes to 30 minutes depending on the service you are receiving. Heed my advice to go get your summer-ready look and follow Becky’s tips and tricks!
