Do yourself a favor and try having a staycation in Little Rock. And here is the good news, I already have just the place for you, downtown’s Residences 221 in the Pyramid Building. This group of luxury apartments, nine in all, is the perfect place for business travelers, sweethearts or families in need of a little vacation during pandemic times.
The Shalins fall in the latter group, and I cannot tell you how happy we were with our weekend “getaway.” This was our first staycation in Little Rock, and while I have always wanted to try one in the Capital Hotel, our 3-bedroom, 2-bath apartment at 2nd and Center Street provided an ideal home base for a fun-filled, yet relaxing weekend.
The apartment (P1) was a beautiful mix of old and new, with original tile flooring still intact and modern updates and accents throughout. There is a full kitchen, complete with a sitting area to gather around, as well as a master bathroom with a walk-in shower and soaking tub.
Did I mention the views?
Expansive windows allow you peer out onto the downtown streets and Arkansas River from nine stories up, and there is even a rooftop lounge area – complete with a grill, seating and hot tub – available to guests. Unfortunately, because of colder temps and windy weather, we were not able to spend much time outside on the top of the Pyramid Building.
There is another perk to a staycation in downtown. Once you park the car, don’t expect to be doing much driving the rest of the weekend. We walked everywhere, and that included stops at Three Fold Noodles and Dumpling Co., At the Corner, and Dugan’s for takeout, as well as some shopping at local shop, Crying Weasel Vintage.
Not into strolling around downtown? Wicked Tacos and 2Twenty1 coffee shop reside in the building. Dave’s Place is also right across the street if you are looking for a dynamite sandwich or some comfort food classics. Management for Residences 221 is even in the process of collaborating with nearby restaurants on special food/drink packages which will be available to interested guests.
I could see partaking in those specials, but I also enjoyed walking down to At the Corner on Saturday morning for fresh baked cinnamon rolls. Dinner from Dugan’s was also a hit, thanks in large part to their irresistibly good Anaheim Turkey Sandwich with smoked turkey, Anaheim peppers, pepper Jack, avocado, and chipotle mayo on wheat bread. We even hit up Three Fold for some pork dumplings, along with their new-to-me dumpling soup, a Vegan broth loaded with veggies and six of those addicting dumplings, perfect for a cold January day.
In the end, our staycation really felt like a true vacation, without all the time-consuming traveling. There is something to be said about packing up all your stuff, getting the in the car, and driving 15 minutes down Markham to your house.
Residences 221 has not seen the last of the Shalin Family.
