I love fragrances. I have always loved them. As a kid, I bought all the cheap perfume the drug store would sell. Then I graduated to Primo at Walmart (“If you like Giorgio, you’ll love Primo” was the ad.) But then it was the mid-1980s, and my mother told me about a store in Little Rock devoted strictly to, I hope you’re sitting down, FRAGRANCES.
It’s Lisa Favorite Things’ fragrance edition. There is one name in the entire state that has devoted its interior to making your home and business a SCENTSATIONAL experience. It’s Powder & Smoke.
First located in the Heights, Mindy Stewart and her mother Merlene have been peddling these wonderful scents, specializing in many items you can’t find just anywhere. My longtime favorite has got to be the Rigaud candles. Rigaud has been in the fragrance business for more than 160 years and was a favorite of the late Jacquelyn Bouvier Kennedy when she was the First Lady. They are deliciously fragrant and also eco-friendly. I recommend the green cypress scent; it might be its most recognizable scent.
Want to know my other favorite items at Powder & Smoke? The Bond fragrance line is an absolute must. These are unique and perfect for any fragrance hunter. If you go in and tell Mindy some of the other scents you normally wear, she can help you narrow down your perfect fragrance. I learned years ago that someone with my coloring, dark hair and eyes, will wear a heavier scent. I learned that our personal pheromones are based on our coloring. I say that because Mindy knows I’ll choose the heavy, woody/spicy scent when I go in. She usually picks it out first for me.
I also like Paul Guess’ fragrance line as well. Paul is a Des Arc boy who has made the state famous with its wonderful sachets and candles. They are beautifully packaged. I am so glad to support his work and have a house that smells so good thanks to Lux!
Another fragrance I’m digging these days (I go through phases) is Tom Ford’s line. I, again, like the heavy scents, and these won’t disappoint.
Let’s move on to swanky gifts. Mindy Stewart has an amazing eye for beautiful gifts that are exquisitely wrapped from Powder & Smoke. I have been on the receiving end of an Olivia Riegel gift in the past. It is the one thing that will make someone always remember who the gift giver was. I love my gold and crystal box I keep on my bathroom counter. The frames from Olivia Riegel are beautiful too; both gold and silver can be found in this fabulous line.
Looking for unique English hotel silver? Mindy collects those pieces and always has a good inventory of them. The silver goblets are on my bucket list of things to collect before I die. Check out the silver trays when you go in.
Beside fragrances, I love clutches and small bags. Powder & Smoke has a great collection of those as well. You can see by the photos I have posted that I gravitated towards my favorite items. After you go in, you’ll find some things you CAN’T live without. If you want that special gift, Powder & Smoke has it. If you want a memorable fragrance, Powder & Smoke has that, too.
I am so glad my mother, who passed away in July, dragged me into that little shop on N. Fillmore in 1986. I have been shopping with Mindy and her mother since then. I still have a bottle of perfume she got me in 1988.
Scents bring back such wonderful memories. Go make your memories today! Powder & Smoke is in the Pleasant Ridge Shopping Center and having its holiday open house on Saturday when Santa will be there. The store will be open on Sundays in December. You MUST go in to see the beautiful things and sniff them. Until then, go to www.powderandsmoke.com.
