Plenty of Arkansas restaurants have jumped into the meatless game recently — from full-blown vegetarian establishments to a handful of “V” footnotes at the bottoms of menus. One of my favorite meat replacement dishes has quickly become cauliflower wings, and Lost Forty Brewing, in Little Rock, serves up the best I’ve ever had. (And there’s a particular news anchor at KARK who would probably cosign that statement.)
Though technically on the appetizers portion of the menu, I order up the cauliflower wings as my entree almost every time I visit Lost Forty. Paired with, of course, a Waffle Fry Boat side order. Each order comes with eight “wings,” which are cauliflower florets battered in a gluten-free, vegan chickpea and rice flour coating, then deep-fried to match the look and feel of a boneless wing. For my money, this is where Lost Forty’s dish elevates from the rest; sometimes, given the nature of the fare, cauliflower wings can lack the proper crunch of traditional chicken wings — but not these. The coating is perfectly crispy without being too heavy. And they stay crispy well beyond the first bite.
The sauce choices are just as delicious. Choose from the Smokey Reaper, Buffalo Way or Sweet & Spicy Q sauces (each of which have vegan versions), as well as ranch dressing (which also comes vegan if requested.) My favorite is the Buffalo Way, but you really can’t go wrong with any of the options.
Whether you’re a carnivore or herbivore, Lost Forty’s cauliflower wings are a must-try. And hey, you can call it “healthy” if you like, since it’s technically a plate full of vegetables.
