MICHAEL MORTON

“I THINK I’VE JUST BEEN VERY FORTUNATE AND BLESSED. I WAS IN THE RIGHT
PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME — A LOT OF IT IS LUCK.”

President, Central Arkansas Nursing Centers, Inc.

Northeastern State University

Stillwater, Okla., moved to Arkansas in 1983

For as large as his list of owned-and-operated nursing homes has become, Michael Morton remains rooted in the simplest of pleasures. In four decades, he has worked his way up from a humble accountant at a nursing home in Oklahoma to the president of a nursing home empire in Arkansas that employs thousands throughout the state. But, like the fiction novels he enjoys reading, he hopes you won’t judge this book by its cover: His perfect day is relaxing at the lake with his family, and he is much more likely to heap praise on his staff than relish it for himself.

FIRST TASTE OF SUCCESS:

The first nursing home I was able to own, purchased with my friend and business partner, in Booneville in the 1970s.

MOST ADMIRABLE QUALITY IN OTHER MEN:

Honesty and straightforwardness. It’s a lot better to shoot it to you straight than just beat around the bush.

PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:

Being able to assemble a large group of people into an organization. I’d say that’s one of the only things I’m really good at is that I can assemble people, get them in the right place at the right time to do their job. No one ever taught me how to do that. I am very proud of the large amount of work that we have been able to accomplish together.

PERSON YOU ADMIRE MOST:

My first Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor. He was a retired military veteran who had gone into work to help people with addiction problems, and I really admired him for being passionate about that. Also, my dad. He was a teacher for 33 years in Oklahoma.

ADVICE TO OTHERS:

The senior housing market is always going to be here in one way, shape or form. It is, in my opinion, a very honorable occupation. Just pick the right places and be careful.

HOW HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCES SHAPED YOU:

When I first started this business, I thought it was about me. But I’ve learned that business is really about pulling people together and moving in the same direction that you are. You’re going to help them, and they are going to help you. I think that is true in any business.

FAVORITE HOBBIES:

Any fowl hunting or deer hunting, spending time at my lake house with my grandchildren and reading fiction.
