We were immediately attracted to the bright, clean design of Lulu’s Latin Rotisserie & Grill, complete with colorful artwork that brings a bit of the flavor of the eatery’s cuisine to the décor.  Heinz Koenigsfest opened the bistro last September.

“I wanted to bring Latin American flair to the Little Rock dining scene,” he said. Originally from Bolivia, Koenigsfest designed the menu to include a mix of Peruvian, Argentina and South and Central American cuisine.

The namesake rotisserie chicken is marinated and cooked over an open flame and is part of Lulu’s most popular dish, parrillada for two. It’s a delicious mixture of flavors and textures. We also enjoyed a serving of empanadas, which were cooked to a golden-brown perfection; the sauces accompanying them may be enjoyed with other items and add to the dishes “that special something.” Our yucca and plantains were prepared Puerto Rican-style — yummy and to an ideal consistency — and with great care, which was also evidenced by the freshness of the tossed salad.

If you enjoy a cocktail or two, you’ll love Lulu’s Latin-based specialties, such as the Picsco Sour or the Cuba Libre. My favorite was reminiscent of a classic margarita; the Caipirinha hails from Brazil and gets its refreshing flavor from cachaca, a distilled alcoholic beverage made from sugar cane.

If you enjoy well-prepared, flavorful cuisine and libations, a visit to Lulu’s is a must.
