When you want a great pie, a good rule of thumb is to go with the most experienced baker. In Little Rock, that would probably be Community Bakery. This SoMa mainstay has been churning out pies, cookies, pastries and more since 1947, and they are still going strong.
AY Publisher Heather Baker and KARK host DJ Williams dropped by Community Bakery to see what they had going on and to try out their pie selection. “We asked them to go to the back and pick out some favorite pies for us to try,” Williams says.

Pies!
Community Bakery definitely answered the call.
In the back of the bakery, John Brandenberger, Community Bakery’s chief operations officer, laid out the pies that were heading to Baker and Williams. Brandenberger had some of Community Bakery’s most popular pies, including its pecan pie, sweet potato pie and Dutch apple pie.

He also introduced some specialty pies – the Rocktown bourbon torte and a pumpkin moose pie. These pies, he says, are designed to impress.
“Two of our specialty pies are our Rocktown bourbon torte. This is actually made with four grain sour mash from Rocktown Distillery right across the street here in SoMa,” he says. “This is a pumpkin mousse pie. It’s made of pumpkin, then we have some Oreo crumbles in the crust and covered in caramel and chocolate. I think these guys are going to be amazed by what it tastes like.”

When Baker and Williams get their pies, they head straight for the pumpkin moose pie. Brand-new, this pie has not been tried by any other customers. “He [Brandenberger] said no one has tried it out except himself,” Baker says.
The verdict?
“It’s good,” Baker says.
“The flavor keeps coming. It starts with a flavor, then it hits you with another,” Williams says.

More pies.
Next, the pair moved to the bourbon torte. Need we say more?
“I’m excited about this Rocktown pie because you know I love some bourbon. We know DJ loves bourbon,” Baker says.
Both Baker and Williams gave Community Bakery the thumbs-up for their delicious pies. “They’ve been doing this since 1947. They have it figured it out,” Williams says.
Two more pie places remain this month. Check back next week for the next stop on the Pie Bucket List tour.
