July is the month we celebrate America’s Independence. We also recognize winning Publication of the Year at the second annual Arkansas Country Music Awards. I have to say that no one in the state has championed country music artists like AY. We’ve featured closeup stories on Ashley McBryde, Justin Moore and Erin Enderlin. This month, we introduce you to an artist you’ll want to keep your eye (and ear) on – he’s Central Arkansas’ own Adam Hambrick. His songwriting for country artists like Dan+Shay put him on the map, but his debut single, “Rockin’ All Night Long,” will warm your heart.
It’s summer, y’all! Some run the other way when they think about July in Arkansas. But the Bakers bask in it! The heat and humidity aren’t enemies to us. The swelter might be for our son, Hunter, who works out in the heat during his last season as a high school football player. But he can always come home to one of his sister’s cool summer treats. Thankfully our younger child, Savvy, is an expert at all things culinary after her time at two different cooking schools. Both the Clinton Foundation and the University of Arkansas Pulaski Tech Youth Chefs’ Culinary Camps have taught her well. That girl has spoiled us with frozen desserts and baked goods alike. See why we love summer?
There is one universal element for hot weather relief and it’s on this month’s cover – the pool. We pay homage to these cooling beauties and dive in with a shot of a beautiful Waterview Estates pool in Roland just west of Little Rock. To compliment a pool, we feature an exquisite, jaw-dropping home designed by interior designer Garry Mertins.
Another essential component of summer is the garden. Long time gardening expert Janet Carson discusses tropical plants for Arkansas. Carson might be retired from the Cooperative Extension Service and radio host but she continues to share her view from the garden with AY readers.
We are always excited to feature libations, no matter the season. This month, we showcase drinks for summer. The refreshments are beautiful and delicious, just like our extensive Barbecue Bucket List. After I finished reading, I started planning my own road trip to the state’s best places to get great, slow-cooked barbecue. And we didn’t stop with just the entree and hooch; we added best grilling and ice cream – two must haves of summer.
If the barbecue list piques your interest, then we hope you enjoy our summertime destinations. Keep this copy handy when planning a summer vacay or staycay.
And if you like this issue, just wait until next month. I’ll tease you with … are you a dog lover?
AY is great summertime reading and I hope you go ahead and subscribe so that you’re never without a copy plus you don’t have to fight for them at the drop-off sites across the state.
See you at the pool! I can’t wait to share more about mine when it’s finished.
