February may be the shortest month of the year, but in the Baker home, it’s definitely one of the most exciting. In addition to the excitement of Valentine’s Day, February is also the month my husband, Joel, and my daughter, Savvy, were born. There’s a whole lot of celebrating going on this month, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
As anyone who lives there or has visited recently knows, Northwest Arkansas is a rapidly growing and changing place. I’m constantly amazed every time I return to find something new and incredible. And while there’s so much new and exciting in the region, there’s also so much history left to experience.
This month, we were lucky enough to capture both the old and the new in Northwest Arkansas. In the pages of this month’s magazine, you’ll find photos of some of the most fascinating old barns found throughout Benton County. Though some of the barns featured are now gone, their pictures and their stories can be found inside the book Barns of Benton County, Arkansas, a wonderful collection of photography and history brought to us by Benton County residents Melba Shewmaker and Monte K. Harris.
In addition to the historic, we also take a look at the new in Northwest Arkansas, with a wonderful feature on outdoor art in Fayetteville. Art truly is a way of expressing ourselves and our culture, and it is even more amazing when that can be shared in such a public venue, as is happening throughout the city of Fayetteville.
We’re excited to also share with our readers a pair of new guides that may help them in making some very important decisions. In our first ever Private School Guide, we aim to help our readers find the school that is right for their children, because it is so critical to their growth and development. As a parent of two children in two different private schools, I know that touring and reading up on your options can make all the difference.
In our Home Building Guide, we have highlighted a number of our region’s finest homebuilders and vendors, for those of you who may be looking to build or remodel. Your home is truly where your heart is. Finding the right neighborhood, builder and designer makes all the difference in the world. We hope that this feature will serve as a helpful guide to you and your family when it comes to building the home of your dreams, or even just sprucing it up.
And because Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, what better time to share with you some of the best wine bars our state has to offer. Each of the great locations featured in this month’s magazine are the perfect spot for your next date night.
So, sit back, pour a glass and enjoy another great edition of AY.
