There are so many different skin care brands and skin care products saturating the market right now, it is hard to know exactly what is best for anti-aging. You hear of products with growth factors, Vitamin C, or hyaluronic acid in them to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. While all those are great ingredients for your skin, the best product to give you younger, more radiant skin is retinol.
Retinol is derived from Vitamin A and is found in many skincare products. Retinol increases skin cell turnover and helps reduce the appearance of brown spots, sun spots, fine lines and wrinkles, as well as acne and large pores. It also gives you a more even skin tone and texture and gives your skin a radiant glow.
If you’ve never used a retinol product before, you want to start off with a lower strength and slowly build up to a higher strength. It is very easy to overdo it and end up looking like a molting snake. Too much of a good thing can be bad. You only need to use a pea-sized amount. You’ll want to start out applying it two or three nights a week at night and then gradually build up to four or five nights a week. Using too much of this product will cause redness, dryness and irritation.
You can use retinol year-round. It does not make your skin more sensitive to the sun. The ingredient itself is sensitive to sunlight, which is why you use it before bed at night. Summer is a great time to start using the product because the humidity makes your skin less likely to dry out as it adjusts to the product. Of course, always apply a sunscreen every morning before leaving your house.
Our very own Dr. Michael L. Spann says, “If you only use one skin care product, make it a retinol.” So what are you waiting for? Go get your retinol – it’s doctor’s orders!
