For this week’s Thirsty Thursday, AY About You sits down with Nathan Mattox, director of operations at Shadrach’s Coffee in Jonesboro.
Shadrach’s Coffee started in the late 2004, early 2005 season, and the coffee kiosk drive-thru was originally given a different name. At the time, coffee wasn’t incredibly popular yet, and business at the kiosk hadn’t quite picked up. The owner and founder, Larry Billing, spent more time than not, thinking about how to increase his customer base. He decided that he would start building up relationships with the customers that he did have. Soon, more and more customers began to get their beverages from Billing’s location. It was then that Shadrach’s was truly born.
In the last 2010, early 2011 season, a second location was opened, then another in 2016. In 2018, the first location outside of Jonesboro opened in Paragould.
Mattox discusses what makes Shadrach’s unique. “There are three big things that we emphasize to all of our new hires that are crucial to our business. Firstly, we emphasize that the quality of every order must be perfect. Secondly, we have to make sure that we work efficiently in order to get our customer’s orders out in a timely manner. Finally, we emphasize the importance of creating a good experience through kind and polite engagement,” Mattox says.
Additionally, once a week, the baristas who wish to participate join together to pray for their customers. You can submit prayer requests on their website.
There are three categories of drinks at Shadrach’s: hot, ice and blended options.
Hot options come in the size options of 12 ounces, 16 ounces, 20 ounces, and 24 ounces. These hot options are brewed coffee in the form of pour overs, lattes and an array of hot style drinks with a litany of flavors and syrup options. Some of these signature flavors include white mocha, tuxedo, kaluah kicker, starry night and blended cookies and cream.
“We also do these drinks in a variety of milks,” Mattox says. “From traditional milk, to almond and soy, to name a few.”
Iced options are the same as the hot drink options, but served chilled or over ice. Some additions to this category include fancier cold brews and nitro drinks. Blended options are usually made with espresso, and are in a cold, blended format instead of over whole ice cubes. Both the iced and blended drinks come in the size options of 16 ounces, 24 ounces, and 32 ounces.
Shadrach’s also serves more unique drinks, like lemonade (iced or blended), Raging Red Bull (iced or blended), Italian sodas, tea, smoothies and milkshakes. Additionally, Shadrach’s has a host of signature fruit flavors with unique names, such as riptide, fizzy unicorn, mermaid tears, electric slide and Arkansauce.
Right now, Shadrach’s has several popular seasonal flavors, such as peppermint mocha, white butter pecan, and butter pecan pie. Mattox notes that at some point, Shadrach’s will likely transition some of these flavors to be carried all year round.
One thing is for certain– Shadrach’s has been able to withstand the test of time, and has emerged from the “fiery furnace” as a formidable Arkansas coffee stop.
