When you’re looking for local, farm fresh food in Arkansas, you don’t have to go far to find it. As AY Publisher Heather Baker and KARK host Hilary Hunt continue their search for the best farm fresh food, they knew they had to make a stop at a local favorite.
That’s right, Baker and Hunt are heading to Local Lime in Little Rock for the latest Farm Fresh Bucket List stop.
“I’m pumped that we here. It’s one of my favorite spots: Local Lime,” Hunt says. “It’s owned by Yelllow Rocket Concepts, and Heather, you know they’re known for using local, fresh ingredients,”
“When I think of farm fresh, I think of Scott McGehee,” Baker says.
And McGehee, the Arkansas Food Hall of Fame winner, is getting ready for the visit. “We’re cooking up some delicious food today. Lots of produce from local farmers with some butternut squash from Barnhill Orchards that go in our carnitas butternut squash enchiladas,” he says.
In addition, the chef and restaurant co-owner will be sending out some fried chicken tacos and some of Local Lime’s famous bowls, along with all the fixings – guacamole, salsa and cheese dip.
Once the spread is at their table, Baker zeroes in on the butternut squash enchiladas. The local squash, she says, makes this dish a winner.
“These butternut squash enchiladas are farm-fresh in Arkansas for sure,” Baker says. “All of the Yellow Rockets do lots and lots of local, but this butternut squash is so good.”
Hunt takes a different tack, going for the chicken tacos. These unique tacos feature jicama-jalapeno slaw, pico de gallo, shaved jalapeno, queso fresco and jalapeno ranch served on house flour tortillas. “One of my all-time favorite things on their menu are these chicken tacos. Ooh, they are good,” Hunt says.
The bowls can’t be forgotten, either. Featuring an array of local ingredients, these bowls are the perfect showcase for the Farm Fresh Bucket List.
“Look at this,” Baker says, taking a bite out of a Local Fresco Bowl. “It has salmon in it, and it is amazing. And there’s nothing better to partner this up with than a house margarita.”
For both Hunt and Baker, one of the best aspects of Local Lime is the welcoming atmosphere.
“One of the best parts about Local Lime is the atmosphere,” Hunt says. “You can bring anybody here.”
At the end of the meal, Baker and Hunt are both full, having tasted a full menu of local, fresh food. But for them, it was all worth it.
“They forced us to come here again,” Baker jokes.
“They forced us to try all of this amazing food and these amazing drinks. Are you kidding? It’s so good,” Hunt says.
“The atmosphere, the staff, the food. You have to come here and eat,” Baker says.
Check back next week when Baker and Hunt head to the next spot on the Farm Fresh Bucket List.
