September has been a festive month all around at the AY Magazine offices. The approach of fall and the start of football season has everyone in a chipper mood, but it’s also a special month for a special person.
This month, we’re celebrating AY Publisher Heather Baker’s birthday with a cake contest. During the “Heather and Lisa Eat Cake Because It’s Heather’s Birthday,” Baker and AY Editor-at-Large Lisa Fischer will be trying out 10 delicious cakes that bakers from around Arkansas have submitted.
“We’re celebrating all month because people are dropping off cakes here at our office in downtown Little Rock, trying to buy our love. It’s easy to do when sugar is involved,” Fischer says.
Baker and Fischer are steadily working their way through the 10 cakes, and they’ve almost hit the halfway point. For the fourth cake, they are having one of Baker’s favorites, a strawberry cake.
This White Chocolate Strawberry Dream cake, made by Dee Morris of Dee’s Delightful Desserts in Little Rock, has a special story. Morris was asked by her husband’s favorite aunt to make a strawberry cake especially for her. When the aunt tasted it, she said it was exactly the cake she had dreamed of.
“This is what I’m loving – the stories behind it. These are really confessions of love that people are doing,” Fischer says. “They’re doing it because they love people.”
The cake has layers of white chocolate cake, with a strawberry and white chocolate filling. It is topped with strawberries and drizzled white chocolate.
“It has pretty presentation,” Baker says. “I don’t want to miss it up.”
But that’s not going to stop these two from having their cake! Taking a bite from the cake, Baker and Fischer are both struck by its taste and moistness.
“This has strawberries that are in the filing as well. It’s two layers, and it’s almost like she’s made strawberry preserves in that filing to do it. That’s what’s making it moist,” Fischer says.
As a strawberry lover, Baker is most impressed by the way the cake is infused with a strawberry flavor. “This is delicious. That cake tastes good, the strawberries are good, the icing is good, the presentation is good. I’ve loving it – I love strawberries,”
Making a white chocolate cake isn’t a simple task. In a testament to its rarity, Baker admits she has never had a white chocolate cake. Fischer compliments Morris on taking on the challenge and succeeding. “White chocolate is hard to do,” Fischer says.
After finishing up their slices, both Baker and Fischer have a new best friend – Morris.
“This girl does a wonderful job,” Fischer says. “Never heard of her – my new best friend. You’re going to get a friend request from me this afternoon.”
“Did somebody pass away?”
“Well, they will. They will have died by tonight,” Fischer jokes.
While that wraps up the fourth cake, there’s plenty more to come. All of the cakes will be judged according to presentation, taste and creativity. A winner will be announced later this month, likely around Sept. 24 – Baker’s birthday!
As an added bonus, the winner of the cake contest will be featured in an issue of AY!
