This restaurant has not one, not two, but three locations that serve some deliciously authentic tacos. Cantina Cinco de Mayo is located on Chenal Parkway, Stagecoach and Center Street, and each one is as yummy as the next.
On this particular trip to the Center Street location, I tried the grilled tilapia tacos. This order came with three tacos (always a blessing) and a side of rice. I can be weird about textures, so I sometimes get nervous about fish tacos and whether or not the fish will be too flimsy and of the same consistency of the tortilla, but this was not the case. The fish was just the right thickness to contrast the tortilla without overwhelming the bite, and the seasoning coating each fillet was so good I was tempted to eat it straight out of the tortilla – but I stayed true to the taco experience.
Pico de gallo and the restaurant’s “special creamy sauce” was served on the side to add according to preference. The flavor of the seasoned tilapia was amazing, but I definitely wanted to try the taco with the pico de gallo and a bit of the salsa. The result was phenomenal to say the least. The chunky pico de gallo with the tender tilapia created a party in my mouth. The salsa gave some heat that highlighted the faint spiciness of the fish. All in all, I was dancing with each bite.
Three tacos are amazing, but to be honest I started to feel full after one and a half (though I finished the second). With one full taco and rice left over, there’s definitely enough to save for the next day and relive the experience.
Though I ordered the tilapia tacos, there is also an alternative choice for the same amount of food in the form of shrimp tacos. I’ve yet to try those, but I’m sure they’re just as wonderful.
