For this week’s Taco Tuesday, AY About You is eating with Capo’s Tacos, one of the best taquerias in Hot Springs.

When Joey Godoy opened Capo’s Tacos in 2018, he wanted to bring a new kind of restaurant experience to Hot Springs. He had sold his previous restaurant, the popular Bleu Monkey Grill, and was looking for a way to serve up authentic tacos to the city.

“My idea with Capo’s Tacos was to bring a modern Mexican taqueria to Hot Springs,” says Godoy. “I wanted to feature street food from Mexico City in a modern restaurant setting.”

Capo’s menu has plenty of the traditional Mexican street fare that Godoy wanted to provide. Popular choices include meats like the carnitas, which is slow roasted pork, or barbacoa, which is a slow roasted brisket. The rajas tacos are another authentic choice, and include roasted poblano peppers, onions, zucchini, and a chipotle crema.

Godoy didn’t stop with traditional street fare, however.

“We also like to have a Southern flair to our menu, being in the South,” Godoy said.” “We have a mix of the traditional and hometown. We like to be creative.”

One taco is even called the Southern taco, which piles fried chicken, jalapeno ranch, lettuce, tomato and chipotle crema on top of a tortilla. The shrimp diablo taco is another popular fusion taco with more of a kick. The shrimp are breaded, fried, and tossed in a habanero mayonnaise.

Capo’s also features a special Taco of the Month. According to Godoy, everyone working in the restaurant has input on what will be included on the special taco. Last month’s featured taco was the chicken and waffle taco, another Southern-inspired treat. The special included fried chicken, mashed potatoes and a maple-chipotle sauce on top of a waffle tortilla. This month’s taco of the month is the “MILA-nesa,” which includes the customer’s choice of panko-crusted chicken or steak, cucumber salad, chipotle sauce and fresh avocado.

The perfect time to try out Capo’s Tacos? On Tuesday, of course! Their classic ground beef and shredded chicken tacos are available for $1.50 on Tuesdays.  The restaurant is also known for its margaritas, and the drink is a perfect pairing with some of their tacos.

Capo’s has quickly become a favorite among customers in Hot Springs. The restaurant was recently voted “Best Tacos in Hot Springs” by the Sentinel-Record. They are currently open for dine-in, and they can’t wait to see you.

“We’re located right across the street from Oaklawn, and we have people come in before or after they head over” Godoy said. “People can come get their weekends started here.”
