Flying Fish has a reputation for some of the best seafood and Southern classics, but what you may not know is that they also have excellent taco options. The restaurant’s Fried Catfish tacos are in the Taco Tuesday spotlight today.
This taco is served inside a crunchy corn tortilla, which I usually don’t go for, but it definitely worked. The crispy shell with the crispy catfish fillets complimented each other beautifully. To provide a contrast of softness moisture, pico de gallo, house-made coleslaw and Comeback Dressing topped the taco in vibrant layers of colors. The pastel green of the slaw below the popping red of the pico, all topped by a burst of orange provided by the sauce brought this taco to life and transported me somewhere with bright blue skies as opposed to our current gray situation.
The catfish fillets weren’t fishy at all. They tasted fresh, flaky and were fried to a gorgeous golden crust. The star of the show in my opinion was the coleslaw. A sweet flavor carried through the slaw that broke up some of the more savory flavors. Next time, I will order extra slaw on the side just so I can enjoy it for a longer period of time. Also providing a sweeter note was the Comeback Dressing. Given the name, I have no idea as to what the ingredients are, but I do know that they are tasty. The sauce was both sweet and spicy, but not overwhelming in the slightest. I think it’s always beneficial for a fish taco to have some form of heat to it to really take it to the next level.
This meal came with three tacos and a large side of rice and beans, so there is plenty to take home. Other tacos at the Flying Fish include the Grilled Tilapia, Salmon Tacos and Shrimp Tacos that can be grilled or fried. This combination of flavors should be on your list of things you need to have in your life.
