Day-in and day-out, the Gaines House works to ensure that women are taken care off, providing adult homeless women who have disabilities with a living residence as they prepare for independent living. Since 1967, the nonprofit has been committed to supporting women and improving conditions for those with mental, physical and behavioral health disabilities.
The Gaines House also is committed to recognizing the achievements of women in the community. That’s why, every year, it presents a deserving woman with the Sandra Wilson Cherry Award.
The award was named after the late Sandra Cherry, who served as an assistant U.S. Attorney was the president of the Arkansas Bar Association from 2001 to 2002.
Now in its 14th year, the Sandra Wilson Cherry Award recognizes a woman who is successful in her career and community service. This year, the Gaines House is recognizing a familiar name, AY About You magazine editor-at-large Lisa Fischer.
Fischer is a broadcast veteran, having worked at KATV Channel 7 and KARK Channel 4, where she hosted Dialing for Dollars. These days, she writes and edits for AY Magazine, while hosting a podcast and overseeing her personal lifestyle magazine.
She will receive the award in a virtual ceremony on Oct. 22 at 6:30-7:30 p.m. There will also be an online auction that will benefit the Gaines House’s ongoing efforts.
Registration for the event is free, and each ticket provides an opportunity to win a gift certificate to a local restaurant.
