At the end of each month, I will take a look back at all of the wonderful things I have eaten over the past thirty days. Here are my top 10 dishes in May.
Cuban Sandwich at Pea Farm Bistro
If you can find a better Cuban sandwich in the area than the one Pea Farm Bistrocranks out, please let me know. Theirs includes fresh-sliced Petit Jean Ham, seasoned pork, mustard, Swiss, and dill pickle, and of course, comes pressed.
Pork Candy at Knightfire BBQ
How do tender chunks of sweet and salty smoked pork belly, sound? A few bites are all you’ll need, so look at these little nuggets of joy as the ultimate meal starter. Make sure to save room for the sliced brisket, ribs and a cheeseburger.
Cuban Nachos at Baja Grill
Go big or go home with Baja Grill’s Cuban Nachos. A plate of tortilla chips is topped with slow-smoked shredded pork, chipotle aioli, sour orange red cabbage and jicama slaw, fresco cheese, cilantro, and avocado. Better split these with a friend and wash it all down with a FlywayRita, one of Baja’s margaritas with a Flyway Bluewing floater.
Fried Cheese Curds at Diamond Bear Brewing Co.
I am fairly certain that Diamond Bear is the only place in town that makes tempura battered fried cheese curds, so kudos to the North Little Rock brewery on its decision to fry cheese. These curds also happen to be fantastic, especially when dipped in some accompanying ranch.
Club Sandwich at Buffalo Grill
Buffalo Grill, to no surprise, keeps things as traditional as possible with their club offering. All the regular cast of characters are there, including turkey, ham, American cheese, crispy bacon, lettuce, mayo, and toasted wheat bread. Carb haters will turn their noses up at the club’s third piece of bread, but oh well.
Chili Chicken at Handi
If you like a little heat, head over to Handi for an order of the Chili Chicken. Boneless breast meat, onions, bell peppers, and cilantro come immersed in a spicy soy sauce. The dish goes great with saag paneer and will have you thinking about a return visit sooner than later.
Turkey Melt at Burge’s
The smoked turkey salad gets all the attention, and deservedly so, but the turkey melt sandwich with three thick-cut slices of turkey, bacon, American cheese, mayo, and crispy iceberg lettuce on a grill-topped bun is every bit as good.
Meatballs at The Pizzeria
At this point, it’s pretty much standard procedure for me to get an order of meatballs when dining at The Pizzeria. And just look at that presentation! The meatballs come with a mixture of ground pork butt, ground beef, and spices, along with a vibrant marinara and a small loaf of buttered bread that’s ideal for dipping.
Seafood Cardinal at Petit & Keet
I rarely highlight items from specialty dinners on my monthly “Top 10” posts, but the Seafood Cardinal at Petit & Keet’s recent 4thanniversary celebration honoring Jacques & Suzanne was just too good to not mention. Wine poached Dover sole, shrimp, and lobster resided in a beautifully constructed puff pastry pocket with a creamy sauce Newburg.
Strawberry Cake at Charlotte’s
I love Charlotte’s strawberry cake. This super sweet, heavily iced, moist slab of cake bursts with strawberry flavor, making it every bit as good as the pie. And before you go all ballistic, just know that I also ordered pieces of coconut and caramel pie.
